How this actually works

This uses pdf.js to extract the real, selectable text from your PDF, then hands it to your browser's built-in Web Speech API (the same system voices used by your operating system's accessibility features) to read it aloud. Nothing is uploaded — both steps run entirely on your device. Voice options, quality, and available languages depend on what your specific browser and OS provide, not on us — we're not running a custom voice model.

What this does NOT do

  • No OCR. Scanned or photographed PDFs have no text layer to read — this tool will show an error rather than guess.
  • No custom AI voices. You get whatever voices your browser/OS already has installed. Chrome, Safari, and Firefox each expose a different voice list.
  • No audio file export. This reads live in your browser; it doesn't generate a downloadable MP3/audio file.
  • No page-image or layout reading — tables and figures are read as whatever raw text order pdf.js extracts, which may not match the visual reading order for complex layouts.

Privacy

No upload — verify it yourself in your browser's Network tab while using this tool.

FAQ

Can it read scanned PDFs?

No — there's no OCR. Only PDFs with real, selectable text work.

Can I download the audio?

Not currently — this reads live using your browser's speech engine rather than generating an audio file.

Why do the available voices look different on my phone vs. computer?

Voices come from your browser/OS, not from us — they vary by device.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No — verify in your browser's Network tab.
