What Is a Fixed Deposit?

A fixed deposit (FD) is a deposit product in which you place money with a bank or other eligible financial institution for a chosen period at a stated interest rate. The amount you receive at maturity depends on the principal, rate, tenure, compounding or payout method, and the institution's terms.

How FD Interest Is Calculated

For a simplified cumulative compound-interest calculation, a commonly used formula is:

A = P(1 + r/n)nt
P = principal, r = annual interest rate in decimal form, n = compounding periods per year, and t = time in years.

Real FD products can have product-specific calculation conventions, payout schedules, premature-closure rules and rounding. Therefore, the calculator should be used as a planning estimate rather than as a bank's official maturity statement.

Cumulative vs Non-Cumulative FD

Cumulative FD: interest is generally accumulated and paid with the principal at maturity, subject to the product's terms.

Non-cumulative FD: interest is generally paid at selected intervals such as monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly instead of being accumulated until maturity.

How Tenure and Compounding Affect Maturity

For the same principal and annual rate, a longer tenure can increase total interest. Compounding frequency can also change the calculated maturity amount because interest is periodically added to the amount on which subsequent interest is calculated.

Example: ₹1,00,000 FD

Suppose you enter ₹1,00,000, an annual rate of 7.5%, a five-year tenure and quarterly compounding. The calculator estimates the maturity value using those inputs. If you change the rate to 6.5% or shorten the tenure, the result changes immediately. This makes the tool useful for comparing scenarios before choosing a deposit product.

Senior Citizen FD Considerations

Some institutions offer different rates or products for senior citizens. Do not assume that one universal senior-citizen rate applies to every bank or tenure. Enter the actual rate quoted by the institution you are evaluating.

Tax on FD Interest in India

Interest from fixed deposits can have tax implications. TDS, taxable interest, exemptions, slab-based tax and your final tax liability are separate concepts. This calculator's tax input is only an illustrative percentage applied to calculated interest; it should not be treated as an official tax computation.

Before investing: Check the institution's current interest rate, compounding or payout frequency, minimum deposit, tenure, premature withdrawal rules, nomination terms and applicable tax/TDS information. Rates and rules can change.

When to Use an FD Calculator

  • Compare maturity values for different interest rates.
  • Estimate how tenure changes total interest.
  • Compare monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and yearly compounding assumptions.
  • Test a target deposit amount before speaking with a bank.
  • Build a simple fixed-income scenario alongside other financial goals.

What This Calculator Does Not Do

  • It does not provide live bank FD rates.
  • It does not guarantee the maturity amount quoted by a particular bank.
  • It does not calculate your complete income-tax liability.
  • It does not account for every institution-specific payout, rounding or premature-closure rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is FD maturity amount?
FD maturity amount is the principal deposit plus the interest earned over the selected tenure, subject to the bank's product terms and compounding method.
How is cumulative FD interest calculated?
A common compound-interest model is A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt), where P is principal, r is the annual rate as a decimal, n is the number of compounding periods per year and t is time in years.
Does this calculator show actual bank FD rates?
No. You enter the interest rate yourself. The calculator does not maintain a live database of bank FD rates.
Is FD interest taxable in India?
FD interest may be taxable according to applicable tax rules and your circumstances. TDS and final tax liability are not the same thing.
Can I use the calculator for monthly or quarterly compounding?
Yes. Select the compounding frequency available in the calculator and enter the annual interest rate and tenure.
Is this FD calculator free?
Yes. The PDFTEQ FD calculator is free to use.
