How this PDF page numbering tool works

PDFTeq processes your PDF directly in your web browser using the pdf-lib JavaScript library. The selected file is read into browser memory, page numbers are drawn onto the selected pages, and a new PDF is generated locally.

Start numbering from a specific page

Use the Start numbering from page field when the first pages of a document should remain unnumbered. For example, entering 2 leaves page 1 without a number and starts numbering with 1 on page 2.

Page X of Y format

The default format is:

Page {n} of {total}

{n} represents the running page number. {total} represents the number of pages being numbered.

Bates-style labels

You can create sequential labels such as CASE-{n} or EXHIBIT-A-{n}. These are useful for simple single-document exhibit or case labels.

This feature should not be confused with full legal Bates stamping systems that maintain a shared sequence across multiple documents.

Important limitations

  • Password-protected or encrypted PDFs are not currently supported.
  • Very large PDFs may require substantial device memory because processing occurs in the browser.
  • The current tool processes one PDF at a time.
  • Four page-number positions are currently available.

Can I start numbering from page 2?

Yes. Enter 2 in Start numbering from page. Page 1 remains unnumbered.

Can I use Page X of Y?

Yes. Use Page {n} of {total}.

Are my PDF files uploaded?

The PDF is processed locally in your browser. The tool does not upload the selected PDF to a PDF processing server.

Can I create Bates-style labels?

Yes. Use a format such as CASE-{n}. This provides sequential labels within one PDF but is not full multi-document Bates stamping.

Can I process password-protected PDFs?

Not currently. Unlock the PDF first and then process the unlocked document.
