How to Remove Blank Pages from a PDF

  1. Select your PDF. Choose the document you want to clean.
  2. Let the browser scan the pages. PDFTEQ renders each page at a small preview scale and analyzes its visible pixel content.
  3. Review detected pages. Pages that appear predominantly white are marked as likely blank. You can change their status.
  4. Create the cleaned PDF. The pages you choose to keep are copied into a new PDF directly in your browser.

How PDFTEQ Detects Blank Pages

A PDF does not contain a simple universal "blank page" flag. A page can look blank because it contains no visible content, while another apparently empty page may contain faint text, scanner dust, shadows, borders, or other marks.

PDFTEQ therefore renders each page using pdf.js and examines the resulting image data in the browser.

The current detector considers a page likely blank when more than approximately 99% of sampled pixels are very light. This is a heuristic, not artificial intelligence and not a guarantee that the page has no meaningful information.

Important: Automatic detection can occasionally classify a very faint page as blank. Always review the detected pages before exporting an important document.

Why the Tool Lets You Review Pages

The safest approach is not to blindly delete every page that looks white. Some documents intentionally contain pages with very little visible content.

Examples include:

  • separator pages;
  • signature pages with very little ink;
  • forms containing faint lines;
  • scanned pages with very light content;
  • pages with subtle watermarks;
  • documents containing intentionally empty pages.

That is why PDFTEQ treats automatic detection as a recommendation. The final decision remains under your control.

What Happens to the PDF?

The original file is not modified. After you confirm the pages to keep, PDFTEQ uses pdf-lib to create a new PDF containing the selected pages.

This means your original PDF remains on your device while the cleaned document is generated separately.

Because the tool creates a new PDF, specialized document features such as digital signatures, complex forms, annotations, or unusual PDF structures should be verified after processing if they are important to your workflow.

Is My PDF Uploaded?

No. The PDF selected for this tool is read by JavaScript in your browser. PDF rendering and page selection happen on your device.

PDFTEQ does not need to receive the PDF file on its server to perform the blank-page detection or create the cleaned document.

You can independently inspect your browser's Network panel if you want to verify what requests the page makes.

Remove Blank Pages from Scanned PDFs

Scanned PDFs are more difficult because each page may be an image rather than a native text layer.

PDFTEQ analyzes the rendered appearance of the page, so it can identify pages that are visually almost completely white even when the PDF contains scanned images.

However, scanner shadows, paper texture, gray backgrounds, dust, or very faint marks can affect detection. For critical scanned documents, review every detected page carefully.
